I think this is one of the best Valdemar stories M。 Lackey has written to date。Tory and Kee go fromValdemar to help rescue one of Tory's unknown cousins。The people they meet, and the terrors they face are riviting。Of course they rescue Sari, Tory's cousin。A good read。 I think this is one of the best Valdemar stories M。 Lackey has written to date。Tory and Kee go fromValdemar to help rescue one of Tory's unknown cousins。The people they meet, and the terrors they face are riviting。Of course they rescue Sari, Tory's cousin。A good read。 。。。more

The best of the threeOf this trio of books, this one is the best。 I wish that there were more about the sleep givers and the adventures of Kee。 Well worth the read!

Keeping up the family tradition of a good story and characters

Ok I just read the hard cover version not the kindle and I only read it once。 However, it was an ok story but pretty predictable。

GreatI love this series about such a likeable family。 It started out great with an introduction to mags and carried on with his life and friendships and now the individual stories starring his children。 I assume this is now the endLook forward to her next series。

My latest audiobook was Spy Spy Again by Mercedes Lackey, a continuation of her Herald Spy series, set in the universe of Valdemar。 This time, it's Tory's turn for a coming-of-age adventure, as his siblings have done before him in the earlier books of the series。 But he has a companion from the start - Kee, the younger prince of Valdemar, who boosts Tory's farsight ability when they are in physical contact。 They get embroiled with the Sleepgivers, a tribe of assassins with connections to Tory's My latest audiobook was Spy Spy Again by Mercedes Lackey, a continuation of her Herald Spy series, set in the universe of Valdemar。 This time, it's Tory's turn for a coming-of-age adventure, as his siblings have done before him in the earlier books of the series。 But he has a companion from the start - Kee, the younger prince of Valdemar, who boosts Tory's farsight ability when they are in physical contact。 They get embroiled with the Sleepgivers, a tribe of assassins with connections to Tory's family, and the two young men go on a quest to rescue a young woman of the Sleepgivers, who has been kidnapped by Karsites。 But the Sleepgiver captive doesn't necessarily need their help, as she has plenty of resources and abilities of her own to help her escape attempts。It's a fun romp, with a good range of characters and the usual type of character arcs I've come to expect from Lackey over many years of being a fan。 This series is by no means her best, but a good narrator generally makes the audiobooks entertaining enough to pass a few hours, and this instalment is no different。 There's a kind of triple deus ex at the end, which resolves everything a bit neatly and easily, but I enjoyed listening and will keep doing so if more books come out。 。。。more

Tory and his best friend Kee (Prince Kyril, not that it matters) are both feeling the pressure and aimlessness of younger sons when Mags' cousin Bey calls in a lifedebt to rescue Bey's daughter from Karse。 Did I mention that Bey and his family lead a clan of assassins?Mercedes Lackey has long been a comfort read for me and this book fits the bill exactly。Good vs evil, fairytale elements, coming of age, even a few potshots at her previous overuse of lifebonds and how ridiculous it is to do border Tory and his best friend Kee (Prince Kyril, not that it matters) are both feeling the pressure and aimlessness of younger sons when Mags' cousin Bey calls in a lifedebt to rescue Bey's daughter from Karse。 Did I mention that Bey and his family lead a clan of assassins?Mercedes Lackey has long been a comfort read for me and this book fits the bill exactly。Good vs evil, fairytale elements, coming of age, even a few potshots at her previous overuse of lifebonds and how ridiculous it is to do border control by building a wall。 I liked the worldbuilding and how it fits into the overall continuity。Do I wish she'd give us more Talia and Skif, rather than Mags and co? Yes, but I enjoyed this all the same。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book, especially the end。 It took a bit to get there but it was worth it。

This was my favorite of the trilogy。 The story was interesting and kept moving at a brisk pace。 It was an enjoyable read that kept me engaged。 I started on a Saturday evening and finished by Sunday lunch。

Shannon

A solid and interesting story that has subtle links to Vanyel and brought more details about the Sleepgivers。 Very enjoyable escapism。

Donna Horton

Entertaining fluff。 Not very demanding。 Sometimes that’s just what I want to read。

Sleepovers returnMags cousin Bey has a powerful family of his own, but the trouble they find themselves in requires help from Valdemar。 We come full circle with a reunion of sorts, and I loved this story。I hope we continue to see more of this extended family。

Doris

A lot of exposition, a lot of deus-ex-machina。

The spying family of ValdemarWhen a deathbringer is kidnapped, the Heralds of Valdemar cone to their aide。 Mercedes Lackey is an incredible author。 Taking you out of the everyday world into the fantasy and excitement of Valdemar。 She will hold your attention from page one。

Typical for series。 Fast paced a good read and introduction of new characters and story lines。 Part of the complete world building experience of this series。

Unfinished business Wild and crazy ride as these two best friends journey to meet their destinies。 All their lives the boys have believed they shared a gift, each having what amounted to half。 Imagine their surprise when they take on a quest and learn that's not the case。 As the story plays out we learn more of the family heritage and we get a glimpse of what fate set in motion many years before。 Unfinished business Wild and crazy ride as these two best friends journey to meet their destinies。 All their lives the boys have believed they shared a gift, each having what amounted to half。 Imagine their surprise when they take on a quest and learn that's not the case。 As the story plays out we learn more of the family heritage and we get a glimpse of what fate set in motion many years before。 。。。more

This one was pretty typical Mercedes Lackey。 A fun story that got better towards the end。 I might be a bit jaded but it seems like Valdemar doesn't have a lot of troubles。 It was a bit on the saccharine side。 Her older Valdemar books felt grittier。 This one was pretty typical Mercedes Lackey。 A fun story that got better towards the end。 I might be a bit jaded but it seems like Valdemar doesn't have a lot of troubles。 It was a bit on the saccharine side。 Her older Valdemar books felt grittier。 。。。more

weak plot, poor character development, extremely poor relationship development, overall weak book

It was fun and I liked some of the ideas presented, but it kind of just fell flat for me。

Great conclusion to the series, recommend reading the other series before this one so that things make sense。

Mercedes Lackey books - particularly those based in Valdemar - feel a bit like "coming home" to classic fantasy。 They invoke a particularly comforting feeling, coming of age stories where everything generally gets wrapped up in a neat little bow at the end。My forays into Lackey's most recent works ("The Herald-Spy" and "Family Spies" books) have left me feeling a bit like she phoned it in。 To me they've seemed shorter and less complex, and have followed some very predictable characterizations an Mercedes Lackey books - particularly those based in Valdemar - feel a bit like "coming home" to classic fantasy。 They invoke a particularly comforting feeling, coming of age stories where everything generally gets wrapped up in a neat little bow at the end。My forays into Lackey's most recent works ("The Herald-Spy" and "Family Spies" books) have left me feeling a bit like she phoned it in。 To me they've seemed shorter and less complex, and have followed some very predictable characterizations and pathways。 I picked up Spy, Spy Again out of loyalty - expecting if not a great story, at least a temporary trip home。 I was pleasantly surprised to find a return to form, and possibly my favourite Valdemar entry of the decade。Some elements of Spy, Spy Again were more adult than the other books, which recently I feel have been presented for a younger audience - the violence was more explicit (to be fair, half of the book was from the viewpoint of an assassin), and one guardsman utters a very surprising swear。 Many of the themes in this book have been touched on by lackey in the past (imprisonment and interrogation, sneaking across the countryside pursued by the enemy, etc 。 。 。) but it went together very well。It's not perfect - there are some relationships that escalate very quickly and tensions that are resolved before even becoming conflicts (a hallmark of Lackey's writing these days) - and it sat partially read on my bedside table for months - so took a while to get into。The new culture we learn about - the Sleepgivers, which were introduced in the Collegium Chronicles (but didn't leave much of an impression at that time), are fleshed out very nicely and we are given a protagonist whose viewpoints are very refreshing compared to the usual "chosen one" storyline we're presented with。 I think I liked some of this stuff as much or more than learning about the Hawkbrothers or Shin'a'in。 The creatures, elementals, flesh out much more of the world and really bring a whole new paradigm (or expand on one, since we've known about simple air elementals for a while)。The final two pages of Spy, Spy Again put a neat bow not just around this story - but around Mags, Amily, and all their kids。 I wonder where we'll go next。 My best guess is that Lackey will bring us deeper into the world of the sleepgivers with either a trilogy or standalone about their past, present, or future。 I do know I'm craving more Valdemar。*As usual - I would /not/ recommend this as a starting place for Mercedes Lackey books or the Valdemar series。 Go with Arrows of the Queen, Magic's Pawn, Brightly Burning, or even Owlflight like I did (though that one references a lot of in-universe world events)。*I am actually considering a Valdemar podcast where a friend and I read through all the books。 Thoughts on a good name for it? :) 。。。more

Another wonderful story set in and around Valdemar, this had me lost in thoughts of magery and the Companions for hours。 Loved it!

She’s done it again - pure magicOnce more the author has woven a tale about Valdemar full of adventure, courage, derring-do and a tiny amount of romance。
